At Bootstrap Tutors, our mission is to offer the highest quality of tutoring for academic subjects, test preparation, and college admissions. All of our tutors are experienced professors and teachers, not college students with high test scores. We’re founded on the core beliefs that there is no substitute for hard, one-on-one work with an expert teacher and that education should be radically transparent and inclusive. We don’t take shortcuts, because shortcuts don’t work. We teach our students to master their subjects from the core concepts up. Every step along that long road is necessary, but we’ll be with you all the way. We’re called Bootstrap Tutors because “bootstrapping” typically refers to starting a self-sustaining process, and that’s our goal. If we do our job right, soon you won’t need us.We offer free consultations and straightforward rates and policies. We’re a small business based in Somerville, Massachusetts, but we also provide virtual tutoring. History Established in 2014. Bootstrap Tutors was founded in March of 2014 by Ryan Judkins, a college professor. Dr. Judkins founded the business to achieve a vision of one-on-one, personalized education that couldn’t be accomplished in the standard classroom.
Before founding Bootstrap Tutors LLC, Ryan Judkins spent six years teaching at The Ohio State University, where he earned his doctorate in English, and then another two at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. After eight years as an English professor (2006-14) and five as a private tutor (2009-2014), Ryan set out on his own and founded Bootstrap in the winter of 2014. While not running Bootstrap, Ryan publishes on medieval English literature and teaches the occasional university course. Some of his recent publications are available online. A resident of Somerville, he also loves to fence saber and to hike. Last July, he backpacked 140 miles in 10 days solo on the Fife Coastal Path and the Southern Upland Way in Scotland.
