I am a very experienced language skills (verbal) coach-Yale grad, NYU grad school- with 7+ years helping students raise their SAT/ACT scores to new levels! Over the years I have developed a unique, specialized coaching model designed for varsity and competitive high school athletes which facilitates rapid skill building and increased in-class confidence. My coaching focuses on the Essay, the Critical Reading and Writing components of the current SAT test. The College Board are currently working on a thorough re-design of this test with a roll-out goal of Feb., 2016. All indications are that this new, re-designed test will place even greater emphasis on vocabulary and reading comprehension. With that in mind, my coaching aims at building an essential skillset that lasts far beyond test day! Standard Written English Grammar-Vocabulary Building-Essay Composition-Reading Comprehension-Study Skills *In your home or local library * Reasonable Rates * References Available *Friendly, Professional, Patient, Passionate about your kid’s success! History Established in 2007. My professional career began in teaching. While a grad student at NYU, I was a TA and lecturer in the art departments of Rutgers and CCNY, City University of New York. After coming to the Bay Area in the 1970’s, I worked for Ma Bell in advertising sales for 30+ years. After leaving the corporate world in 2006, I worked as an SAT tutor for Ivy West before starting my own business-Coaching to Win-in 2007. My work with students has always aimed at building essential skillsets that last a lifetime. This is why, early on, I began to present myself as a “coach” rather than a “tutor”. Professional athletes benefit from ongoing coaching; why shouldn’t students, engaged in similar competitive environments, have the support of ongoing coaching themselves? The classroom setting by itself is simply too restrictive to produce the kind of excellence in education that today’s students need to be successful.
I received my BA degree from Yale where I studied Medieval history and the art and architecture of Renaissance Italy. I pursued graduate work in the history of art at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts and taught undergraduate courses in the art departments of Rutgers University and City College, City University of New York.My special interests include jazz, cycling and languages, especially the relationships between everyday English words and their origins in classical Greek and Latin. Currently I sing "lead"-the melody-with Voices in Harmony, a 50-man a capella barbershop chorus located in Silicon Valley, and I teach current events and jazz history classes to several groups of senior citizens on the San Francisco Peninsula.
