Our Mission is to inspire independence and expand the foundation on which young adults with Asperger’s, ADHD and other Learning Differences can build happy and productive lives.CIP is one of the most comprehensive programs in the world for young adults on the autism spectrum and with learning differences.Students receive individualized supports in the area of social skills, college academics, internship and career development and life skills. Incoming students are assessed and a Level of Support is determined which provides each student with the appropriate amount and type of supports for success. While students receive CIP’s individualized core curriculum and supports, each student individually chooses to pursue one of the following areas of focus. With the insights provided by Dr. Michael McManmon and the CIP Professional Advisory Board, individuals who are leaders in their fields, CIP comprehensively addresses student needs for best possible outcomes. History Established in 1984. Founded in Lee, Massachusetts in 1984, the College Internship Program (CIP) originally served as a community-based alternative to institutions for students with Learning Disabilities. The program was founded to supply a transitional apartment program for individuals to learn the skills necessary to live independently. From the beginning, the program served as a psycho-educational alternative to traditional “medical model” facilities. The founder, Dr. Michael McManmon, was profoundly influenced by the work on “Normalization” by Wolfensberger. The belief is that students with learning differences must live, learn and work in environments which duplicate normal real-life conditions. With assistance from our Professional Advisory Board Members, CIP has developed comprehensive curriculum specifically for Asperger’s syndrome, high-functioning autism, nonverbal learning differences, ADHD and other learning differences.
Michael McManmon, Ed.D. founded the College Internship Program in 1984. He received a B.A. in English from Mt. St. Mary's College in Maryland, a Masters in Counseling from Shippensburg University, a Masters in Human Development from the University of Kansas (through a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health), and a Doctorate in Special Education from the University of Nevada. He is licensed as a Psychologist by the State of Massachusetts. Prior to Founding CIP, he worked for state, private and non-profit organizations in several states and was certified as a family teacher through the Boys Town Center in Nebraska.During his 39 years of experience with students with Learning Differences and Asperger's Syndrome, Dr. McManmon has worked on Curriculum Development, Staff Training, Program Evaluation, and Administering Community Based Programming.
